Underground Legend Goes Solo
Underground music legend from Hiphop Duo TIL THE BREAK is striking out on his own with a powerful, politically charged hip hop album, released today (21/04/2021).
After 10 years of creating genre bending music in rural South Australia and being one of the double heads of Til The Break, Taiaha’s first full-length solo album is called Rubbah Dubs.
Til The Break hip hop duo saw success with 2012 EP CAYA, featuring single Bargain Hunter, which was played on Rage. Prolific songwriters and performers, TTB have performed over 100 shows in their career, always focusing on live performance and real instrumentation, while also releasing 4 albums, 2 mixtapes and an EP.
All this has meant that over the past decade, TTB’s work has been etched onto Adelaide’s music history alongside catchy hooks and raw lyrics.
These elements have always been the formula and foundation to Taiaha’s projects. He recorded his first solo vein of music with Carclew backing his EP “The Lucky Rubb Experience” with a project development grant in 2016. He has also performed alongside the likes of Archie Roach, Bone Thugs and Harmony and Chris Finnen.
After all these years of making music, Rubbah Dubs shows Taiaha is continually perfecting his craft, as his talents in song writing, melody choices, lyrics, executive production and vocal flexibility are clearly visible in this debut solo offering.
The beaches and laidback lifestyle of his hometown of Aldinga, South Australia have been apparent in Taiaha's music from day one. However, as he has matured, became a father and learned more about his heritage, the strength of his Maori culture also shines through in his music and lyrics.
Speckled throughout the tunes on Rubbah Dubs are Maori words, the waiata on guitar has become a classic stereotype for Pacifica culture and there is a tie between the Drillin' neo-warrior culture and the haka that runs in his blood that also holds the face of a softer voice, with a guitar, by the campfire.Taiaha is best of both these worlds.
Rubbah Dubs is fresh and new and approaches complex issues with brutal honesty. It is a clear-cut new style of record for Taiaha while keeping a firm hold of his musical integrity.
“Maintaining an attitude of music for music’s sake and having the live element as the driving element was great training ground,” said Taiaha.
“Now I am trying to write the best songs and produce the best record I can. I feel like I’m refreshed and only getting started.”
