Lagoon Nebula by Supershell

The Lagoon Nebula is a giant interstellar cloud in the constellation Sagittarius. It is classified as an emission nebula and has an H II region. It’s also a stellar nursery: a place where new stars are born. And an open star cluster – NGC 6530 – made of hot, blue stars just a few million years old lies in this region. In addition to these young stars, there are also many dark Bok globules (dark nebulae) of condensing gas and dust. These are on their way to becoming protostars, and ultimately fully-fledged stars like those already formed nearby.

The Lagoon Nebula is estimated to be between 4,000–6,000 light-years away from the Earth, and roughly 130 light-years in length.
Like many nebulae, it appears pink in time-exposure color photos but is gray to the eye peering through binoculars or a telescope, human vision having poor color sensitivity at low light levels.
