Beekeeper2 by Magdalene
As one of her moodier releases, Magdalene's "Beekeeper2" sets a jazzy, smokey atmosphere that takes full advantage of the concept it puts straight at the front. Drowned out pinks and yellows set the tone for often muted yet always punchy percussion, the colors of a dry-hot, burning-hot summer. Simple but effective, this album sounds just like it looks.
Other than occasional stylistic breaks for emphasis such as on 'Bustling Hive' which serve to give greater emphasis to the surrounding tracks, the mood is suppressed, yet exuberant at times. Even when it is bordering upon energetic, it is given polish as to blend into the background. Portions of electronica bleed out through primarily jazz sampling before taking exit into the next.
Despite the slow pace and subdued mood, the music never outstays its runtime, always making way for another idea and then springing into action momentarily to draw back attention when the time is right. Magdalene stuns as usual with this release, leaving us excited to have released it.
