on the occasion of NASA (once again) treating us to the interpreted 'sound' of a black hole (august 23rd 2022, 'the guardian'), we present here our own version of things- two pieces that ponder the unimaginable vastness of space & the invisible forces that lurk in the darkness. the title track is named in tribute to the short story 'neutron star' by larry niven, in which the protagonist is persuaded to investigate the locality of a collapsing star & encounters savage gravitational effects.
so. enjoy.
an hour & seven seconds that you will never get back unless time starts running in reverse or something.

>>startide was amongst the very earliest pieces we recorded in this latest incarnation of our trio. steve had just "quit being a drummer forever" & the studio was moved to it's current location in north london, late 1993.
the pieces here, though recorded some time apart, were both live-to-2-track, 1/4" tape, & the digital editing was in it's infancy... but we persevered.
steve's colleagues at the bbc, upon hearing the title piece, remarked that it was "a real toe-tapper", to which steve replied "gentlemen, we have captured the sound of space", meaning the very depths of the whole universe, not an empty cupboard or something.<<
