inside/out by Pretty Dad

Space is an instrument:
the container of air determines which pitches resonate, and how long transient sounds take to decay. The room shapes your intentions. It sends suggestions.

The use of live reverb and delay effects, catalyzing and catching and reeling in feedback loops with a pistol-gripped shotgun microphone, changes the size and shape of the space. When the space changes, the listening and communication between each musician changes.

inside/out contains excerpts of two improvisational electroacoustic performances, where this dynamic listening is at play:

on a rooftop among birds, bugs, and traffic

within an anechoic apartment studio, lined with comforters and a dinosaur blanket

Both performances, in ensemble with the walls and with the sky, ebb and flow and breathe. Made both cohesive and unpredictable by live room manipulation, Pretty Dad allows the settings of these disparate venues to sing in in ways more alike than different.

Pretty Dad is a four-piece ensemble from Houston, rooted in improvisational performance and communication. They fuse the concepts of experimental genres into a dynamic, free flowing conversation that goes from serious to funny, monumental to entertaining, polished to scratchy.
