Barefoot by Jack Radsliff
Jack Radsliff strides confidently in the Portland jazz scene with his latest album, "Barefoot." This foray into modern mainstream jazz is both a love letter to the region’s rich legacy and a showcase for Radsliff's rapidly blossoming voice. Having gained a lot of visibility in the Pacific Northwest jazz scene in recent years, Jack delivers an album that feels comfortable and familiar, yet full of unexpected delights. The album showcases Radsliff's original compositions brought to life by a stellar band featuring Pacific Northwest jazz icons: pianist Randy Porter, bassist Todd Sickafoose, and drummer Alan Jones.
The title, "Barefoot," evokes a sense of intimacy and being exposed that resonates throughout the album. Much of the album’s music is inspired by Radsliff’s young family, and the title itself stems from a particular ethos they embody. The opening track, "First Rain," sets the mood with a swirling piano intro and gentle guitar melody that feels like raindrops pattering on a windowpane. Lush chords wash over the listener, hinting at the influence of jazz guitar greats like Jim Hall and Pat Metheny, but a subtle shimmer adds a touch of modern mystery. This balance between tradition and innovation becomes a recurring theme.
The album immediately slows down for the introspective "Rio." The guitar takes center stage, delivering a poignant melody that evokes a balancing act between vulnerability and strength. The underlying harmony is rich and complex, hinting at the depth of Radsliff’s compositional style.
"Tightrope" injects a dose of energy, propelled by a playful melody and pointed hits from the rhythm section. The spirit of adventure is encouraged with the shifts in rhythmic feel and open harmonic structure. The interplay between the band is particularly delightful, weaving a conversation that feels both familiar and fresh.
The title track is a country-esque song, sung by Radsliff, himself. The train beat and acoustic guitar draw out some of the Americana one might hear on early Metheny recordings, but the fresh harmonic flavors give it a more modern taste.
"Barefoot" is a personal statement from Jack with the warmth and honesty that permeates the music. Jack describes his music as earnest, playful, and heart-forward and this is evidenced by his masterful guitar work, evocative melodies, and subtle twists. "Barefoot" is sure to solidify Jack's place as a rising star in the Pacific Northwest jazz scene and beyond.
