2047 by ph4nt.

2023 - The consequences of climate change are now unmistakable in Central Europe, as the climate catastrophe forcefully takes centre stage. Nevertheless, action is taken hesitantly or not at all, destruction and exploitation remain the status quo, and the automobile continues to be the cherished cash cow of the Germans. Business as usual is the modus operandi, and resistance is increasingly fiercely criminalized.

2035 – Long lasting droughts sweep across the country, and water scarcity has long been prevalent in Nuremberg. Heat-related deaths become as commonplace as formerly traffic fatalities, and many people in Franconia learn the meaning of the word "hunger." Forest fires caused by dryness, as well as flooding during short, intense rain phases claim further victims. The portion of the population that can still pretend that everything is in perfect order dwindles daily. Nonetheless, capitalism successfully clings to its throne.

2047 - The governments of Central Europe, if they still exist, engage in bitter and lossy resource wars, particularly for water reserves. More and more people in Germany live in precarious conditions. The system is increasingly faltering but still vehemently opposes resistors and those who seek their happiness in non-capitalist ways of life. The migration movement, which has long arrived in the wealthier countries of Europe, now moves further north towards Scandinavia.

ph4nt.'s new album tells short stories from different perspectives, imagining human fates between today and 2047. In fact, ph4nt. was inspired by a call from the Urban Lab to submit texts from fictional diaries of Nuremberg residents in the year 2035 for the project "What if...". The issue of climate change and how one can become or remain politically active is something that ph4nt. cannot let go of. The fact that ph4nt. has been on probation since the spring of 2023 due to political "offences" only makes the urgency to take action against the climate catastrophe even more pressing for ph4nt. In this regard, 2047, as is customary for ph4nt., does not present an utopia but mercilessly reveals how the world, and specifically life in ph4nt.'s hometown of Nuremberg, may look like in the future if the powerful continue to destroy the world for quick profits, and we don't start fighting decisively against it. While "Verwüstung" mourned a nihilistic end and doubted the revolutionary power of activism, 2047 aims to be a clear call to action. Who knows if we can still avert the catastrophe, but we have no better option than to die trying! That may not be the most positive incentive, but with the daily traffic jams and the disproportionate repression that brave activists constantly face, ph4nt. has no desire to conjure positive stimuli out of thin air.

Moreover, the music that awaits the listener on 2047 cries out for dramatic narratives: The sonic landscapes are dominated by nasty, punchy industrial beats, this time complemented by mostly harsh power chord riffs from ph4nt.'s electric guitar – a first within ph4nt.s cosmos. The synthesizers behind 2047 are also new (well, second or third-hand new), with a Moog DFAM and a Sonic Potions x Erica Synths LXR-02 responsible for the rhythms, and a UNO Synth Pro Desktop responsible for most of the more melodic synth layers. The familiar Novation MiniNova can also be heard on Album Number 7. Although ph4nt. is still nowhere near being a metal-vocalist, they felt encouraged to scream & shout a bit more this time around. Additionally, with longtime friend and collaborator Jakkl of Leiden and Die false Jacke, ph4nt. has a featured guest for the first time. Recording and editing were once again done with the wonderful free DAW Ardour.
