Right Turn by Chloe Kim 김예지
Here’s my first solo drum EP, Right Turn.
Since moving to Australia in 2012, getting involved with a variety of jazz and improvised music communities through drumming was a right turn for me. I value all of the generous mentorship and friendship I experienced in Canberra, which fostered my passion for drumming.
In 2016, I started studying Jazz Performance at Sydney Conservatorium of Music. I would love to say a huge thanks to all those who have supported and encouraged my growth in my personal drumming journey:
Simon Barker, for his ongoing kind and powerful drum lessons. Chris Hale for his warm heart and unending sharing. Bae Il Dong for providing knowledge and motivations for a solid foundation. Peter Knight, Barney McAll, David Theak, Zoe Hauptmann and Richard Belkner for trusting and supporting my creative vision. Anthony and Sharon Lee for their generous financial support during my studies.
All of your support made me ready already for my next movements in drumming.
Learning about the music and rhythm of Korea – where I was born and raised – in a new world I moved into – Australia – gave me not only a strong sense of appreciation for my roots and identity, but also an opportunity to recover from confusing thoughts and times of growing, related to drumming or otherwise.
Last but not least, I love and appreciate all the love and support I have received from my powerful family. Seyeun, Youngmi and Yebin are my rays of life.
There also is the ray, the true ray with never failing, neverending love and grace, who allows this gift of my drumming. Jesus Christ I love, is my ray at the beginning, during and the end. All glory is His.
My life-long friends, in and out of the music scene, also brighten up my life: Jacques Emery, Holopeak, Improper Citation, KKD, Ta Go Lak, and friends in the past, present and future of the Australian music community.
