Lyrics
When they have strengthened themselves with food, Wolfdietrich asks for advice on how to redeem his companions.
‘I advise,’ says Count Hermann, ’that you choose twelve of us to go to that castle in pilgrim's robes and beg for alms. In doing so, we will hear if your companions are alive.’
Wolfdietrich likes this advice, and when night comes, he goes to the castle with twelve knights. Everything is quiet and they hear the guards complain:
‘When will our misery end? If only we were dead! Nothing good has happened to us in thirteen years since the wild woman took our lord from us. But today I dreamt that a mighty eagle was coming to carry us away from here.’
Wolfdietrich then reveals himself, and the brothers help him and his companions onto the wall. Once at the top, he breaks their chains and is told that Duke Perchtung died at Whitsun. The red fades from his cheeks, and he weeps bitterly for his noble master. Thirteen men came to the castle, twenty-three leave.
