Negative Affixes by Order for Chaos

order for chaos - negative affixes - a central tenet of complexity science is that order emerges at the edge of chaos, often as human problem solving agents make decisions to preserve structure in the wake of disorder - affixes are linguistic units commonly placed at the beginning or end of a word to modify the word's meaning - negative prefixes negate the meaning of the word that follows - the /un-/ in undo negates the act of doing - the /dis-/ in dismember negates being a member - the /un-/ in unlearn negates what has been learned - the /dis-/ in disconnect negates being connected - my agency empowers me to undo that damage i have experienced - my agency empowers me to reconnect the individuals toxic leaders have tried to remove from membership - my agency empowers me to unlearn what i think i already know so i can expand on my understanding - my agency empowers me to reconnect when i have been disconnected - this project is the first of 3 4-song eps - it is agency in the face of toxic leadership - the tracklist, lyrics and context follow:
/un/do…you’re gonna break them - you’re tearing up theirs lives - you’re gonna break their innocence - with every spoken lie - you’ve forced your scars - burned them into their hands - by committing every single - every ugly act that you have - breath by breath, breath by breath - word by word, word by word - day by day, day by day - act by act, act by act - i just wanted to live in your light - just wanted to stand with you - i just wanted to be your shadow - and now I’m the means to undo - you gave me pain - i was too young to leave - you gave me these stains - that I could never clean, you - gave me this guilt - when all I needed was love, you gave me this hate - and I made it my drive - i just wanted to stand by you - just wanted to stand with you - i just wanted to be your shadow - and now I’m the means to undo.
/dis/member… i can never again trust your words - because I can never forget your leadership actions - where you painted an inaccurate picture - to divide us into rival factions - the more you want them to seem less human - less relatable, less like people and altogether unforgettable - the more you bend the narrative toward hate - the more I realize your leadership is unforgivable your policy to dismember - it dies if we remember - every time you try to drive a wedge - between me and those that took the pledge - to uphold the tired, the poor and yearning - you sharpen my edge and keep this fire burning - i will never turn away, away your policy to dismember - it dies if we remember - i will never turn away, away - away.
/un/learn… under this framework culture is a network of problem-solving resources - it facilitates human social organization and offers patterned behaviors - these behaviors allow us to interpret experiences, tag those experiences with information and encode them as memories - if unimpeded by external coercion members of a cultural group can recall experiences to solve new problems - if an old solution works, then keep it - If it does not work, or can be envisioned as better, then adapt it - over time appreciative and adaptive processes marry people to their resources, resulting in increasingly specific social roles, highly calibrated units of analysis, and specialized abilities to envision outcomes in harmony with their environment - problem-solvers balance optimization equations, exploring the tension between labor, leisure, love, intimacy, agency, structure, expenditure, investment, identity, preservation, the past and the present - again, these solutions become increasingly specific, differentiating and calibrating individual agents' actions, which often lead to unpredictable nonlinear collective traits - colonization then, is a forced fragmentation of that cultural network - it is the undoing of the history of problem-solving, and the severing of interactions that allow purposeful decision-makers to preserve their identity across space and time - it is a corrosion of the non-random, non-trivial activities that allow us to make and remember history in the form of a coherent narrative - colonization is the forced rewriting of cultural DNA; a hacking of evolutionary social algorithms - it is the simplification of complex problem-solving capacities - if the rewriting is rapid enough, reaching every part of the network component, persists into foreseeable time periods, and overwhelms problem-solving faculties then network nodes can be pushed beyond coherence; narratives become distorted, and their culture spirals into disorder - dedifferentiation becomes a protection strategy, where survival forces agents into new roles, abandoning specialization for inefficiency, embracing reserve strategies until the terror passes - the paramount question becomes, “is enough of the cultural code preserved?” is there enough of what was good and sustaining to support the network again? can the group survive the entropy? on the edge of chaos order emerges - the network rebuilds, realigns, and recreates clusters and small worlds, reducing geodesic distances, empowering nodes to solve problems again, built on ancient architectures, but capable of meeting new challenges - if the group is aware of its past, it can see the incoherence in its narrative -
if it can address the anxieties and connect people to social capital rather than pulling itself apart, if it can reestablish boundaries without hypervigilance, then it may recreate a functional community, reestablish a completely connected network - collective - agent - coherent narrative - survival - a challenge - anxiety.
/dis/connect… they don’t want to see you - picked up when you're forced down - held up when you're bruised and beaten - cared for when you're kicked around - your enemies don’t want to see you - loved or supported - our enemies want to see our network - broken and distorted - i won’t turn away from you it doesn’t matter what they say - they don’t want to see you - picked up when you're forced down - held up when you're bruised and beaten - cared for when you're kicked around - when we’re connected to the whole - our voice is added to the chorus - but when we’re disconnected - the group falls victim to the soloist - I won’t turn away from you it doesn’t matter what they say - an individual - alone in a trivial fight - with no one to rely on - when you know you’re right
so they wear and tear - until you can’t carry on - but they don’t care i’ll reach out I’ll reach out for you - they wear they wear they wear on you - until you can’t carry on - but I’ll reach out I’ll reach out for you - i won’t turn away I won’t turn away from you - it doesn’t matter they say - i won’t turn away I won’t turn away from you.
