#Stigmata by Heejin Jang

Using a Buchla 200 during her residency at EMS Stockholm in 2018, Heejin Jang has created a raw and complex experience of vulnerability and pain. Stuttering noise and machine cries drone and pulse desperately, as if trying to feel, as if trying to embody the flesh that made and manipulated them. One could almost mistake the kinetic energy released by each track as the warmth of a beating heart – and indeed, there is no mistaking the warmth and humanity (mechanized as it is) inherent in this work. Through the noise, roar, and hum of the machines envisioned here, we can hear a voice – or a multitude of voices – speaking out and entreating us to listen, to understand, and to have sympathy.
