I also made this drum in the clay class.
This rhythm is in Tintal which is an eastern indian word for a 16 beat cycle, and thus also an eastern influence. The longer the cycle, the more concentration is needed to play it. concentration leads to meditation, meditation leads to transcending perception, and time, which leads to oneness in Spirit and it's timeless time of the eternal now; transforming all actions into love in a peaceful way.
