Phonography by Matte Martin
If it's not obvious, Phonography (a portmanteau word used to recall both 78 rpm records and The Cure's pitch-black 1982 album), is an attempt to combine goth and dark rock, Frank Sinatra-esque big band vocal jazz, and classical arrangements.
This album represents the last several years' battles of influence and inspiration: goth vs pop; Brian Wilson vs Frank Sinatra; Shostakovich vs John Williams; Wallace Stevens vs Ira Gershwin; growth vs decay; hope vs hopelessness.
It is a melancholic album with many moments of joy and superheroic optimism. I hope that the sounds contained here will seem both nostalgic and forward looking, and that they will resonate with a few special people.
