Resilience by Luis Gabriel Aguilera
2018 was perhaps the most challenging year of my life. Early on in February, I lost a dear friend to cancer. And later on in the year cancer struck once more - this time closer to home, as I lost my mother to it in late October. Thankfully, both my yogic practice of 12 years now and my practice of Zazen has kept me centered. And I am grateful that my response has been to reflect and create rather than to wallow in misery.
The plan wasn't to work on anything like this current project. Instead, the thought was to begin work on some gritty driving techno. But given the circumstances, it came to me (at the hospital where my mom was hospitalized in the last few weeks of her life no less) that I was inspired to work on something ethereal, investigating the notions of vulnerability and the epiphanies and openness that arise during deep and sustained struggle. So there I was on a piano in the hospital when the exploration and audio interpretation began. And these three compositions are the manifestations of my reflections.
The first piece in this EP, "Resilience," was mostly written at the hospital while my mother was alive. The second, "Unsure," when she had returned home for that final leg of her journey. And the third composition after her passing away. These are not mere somber requiems. They are hopeful and lucid works that I hope induce contemplative and joyful states in you the listener. It is understood that the lotus develops its roots in the murkiest of waters, so I hope that I have produced some flowers from what has come to pass.
