In Greek mythology, Psyche was the youngest daughter of a king, who despite being beautiful to the point of arousing the envy of Aphrodite, remained single and without suitors. Aphrodite, filled with jealousy of the girl, ordered her son Eros to make her fall in love with the most hideous monster he could imagine.
On the other hand, realizing that he could find no suitors for his daughter Psyche, the king consulted the oracles who advised him to dress her in wedding garments and leave her on the top of a cliff. Taken then by a very strong wind, Zephyrus, Psyche woke up in a dream palace, all marble and gold and was taken to her room, where in complete darkness Eros introduced himself to her as her husband. He made it clear that he was a horrible monster, but that he would treat her with extreme kindness and delicacy, but he imposed a condition, that she never saw him, they could only meet in complete darkness. Eros wanted Psyche to fall in love with his essence without caring about his appearance.
Somehow Eros ended up falling immensely in love with the girl and Psyche in turn also fell in love with Eros and lived extremely happy with him, even without being able to see his face. However, Psyche missed the family very much and persuaded Eros to allow her to pay them a visit, which he very grudgingly allowed.
Her sisters, however, envious of the life that Psyche led in a most luxurious palace and treated with such love, convinced her to, when Eros was sleeping, light a candle so that she could see his face. So she did and it was then that she saw for the first time that her husband Eros was actually an extremely beautiful boy, an angel. But inadvertently let a drop of hot wax fall onto his shoulder, waking him up. Realizing that Psyche had broken her promise, Eros disappeared and with him the palace and she was back on the cliff from which she had been taken so long before.
So, alone and helpless, Psyche wanders the world through terrible sufferings, regretting her lack of trust in her love. Eros, however, upon realizing the true repentance of the beloved, goes to Zeus to plead for Psyche to be freed from so much suffering. Zeus then gives Eros the option that he hit her with an arrow that makes her immortal and so they both went to Olympus, where they live forever and later had a daughter whom they name Hedoné, the goddess of pleasure.
