This album is a collection of edited excerpts from our rehearsals for SkinMusic at MONA FOMA 2019. The recordings are thus suitably rough, enhanced with a bit of reverb to simulate spaces we'd have rather been in. Everything was live. The only overdubbing is the string drum on track 3.
Sonja is playing a big slab of SCOBY lying on a simple oscillator interface: hold one end of the circuit and complete it by touching the SCOBY. The player(s) become part of the instrument. A volume pedal is used on some tracks for phrasing. Karlin and Bruce are playing reed and percussion instruments made by the late leather sculptor, Garry Greenwood. Bruce also plays a dried SCOBY maraca-type thing, and other hand percussion.

Karlin Love is a US-born composer and performer living in Tasmania. Karlin aims to gently extend and expand traditional sound worlds and provoke greater democracy in ensemble music-making. Her works have been recorded by Clarity clarinet quartet, The Chordwainers leather ensemble, and the University of Tasmania Wind Ensemble. She's accumulated a few degrees over time: B.A., M.Mus., M.A., PhD.
