Reminder by A Veil Of Water

HV012 A Veil Of Water - Reminder
"Reminder" is the debut album by multi-instrumentalist Rune Trelvik, under the moniker A Veil Of Water.
"Reminder" represents the culmination of a two year long journey through a tumultuous relationship. This album travels through the feelings of initial attraction, infatuation, love, hope, nostalgia, and the subsequent loss of the entire bond.
Self-taught in piano, drums, guitar, and bass, Rune has drawn inspiration from a wide array of musical styles utilizing essences rather than direct influences by the bands and genres he appreciates. Experimental in nature, A Veil Of Water has been mostly associated with post-rock and neoclassical styles, yet remains faithful to its re-occuring melancholic theme.
In short, A Veil Of Water tries to capture fleeting sensations, momentary glimpses, and feelings of longing, producing a musical representation of his internal world.

Reviews:
A Veil of Water führen mag.

In listening to "Reminder," we are presented with numerous melodic textures, each carrying their own weight and contributing greatly to the whole. This is a classic album to which listeners just have to sit back and relax. This music is beautiful and provocative. For using the piano as the centerpiece,
Tralvik creates deep and energetic pieces as well as slow, melancholic burners, each of which carve a comfortable niche in the lucky listener and remain memorable for days on end.

I find this album utterly captivating and beguiling ... it seduces me in a manner that leaves me helpless to its whims. I think it is mostly to do with the way Rune Trelvik plays the piano ... his self-taught style is hypnotic ... his style is simple yet never simplistic ... he places a great deal of emphasis on melody and it shows.

the Norwegian A Veil Of Water's soundscape is composed of piano-tapped chords just following to each other in the mode of changing keys and moods (at times being doleful, at times providing more speedy and a little jollier spans). These 13 pieces constitute soothing feelings getting traction to epic, ascending post-rock overdrives and even outbursts now and then. The ending track Ad Infinitum is the welcome exception regarding the whole on the strength of a suggestive motif of the orchestrated bleed which is a little itchy within the epic concept.

Thankfully, there are still some artists out there willing and able to make an album based around their piano, and Norwegian musician A Veil of Water‘s debut album Reminder is the best I’ve heard since Matthew Bourne’s Montauk Variations last year. The compositions on Reminder are restrained, without a note out of place or a chord struck in anger; it’s very much music to soothe the savage breast for the majority of the tracks here. That’s not to say A Veil of Water lacks variety or just sticks to the black and white notes; delicate drones of guitar colour a few tracks with added atmospherics, and “Retrouvailles” takes a surprising turn, nodding to Rachel’s in its use of dynamics.
Many in the opening sequence of tracks rely on spacious chords underpinning the wheeling patterns or fragile melodies carved out by the right hand, which create lovely tones that aren’t too adventurous but are wonderfully impressionistic. It’s only on tracks in the second half of the album that Rune Trelvik nudges at the boundaries, with moments that catch the listener off guard and some elements of post-rock thrown in for good measure, such as “Vanishing Stars” which sounds like the second coming of Hope of the States – except instrumental and all played by the one man. As with the Bourne album, Reminder shows how versatile a piano can be; sometimes stately, sometimes calm, other times angry and passionate. This is, after all, an instrument that both Erik Satie and Jerry Lee Lewis played – we might be in danger of forgetting that, as our piano gathers dust in the corner like an oddly-shaped mantlepiece. So thanks be to A Veil of Water for reminding us.
