Under normal conditions, a healthy person will not begin to experience a decline in their hearing due to age, until well into their sixties. Unfortunately, noise induced hearing loss, especially among younger individuals has increased dramatically. People who are exposed to excessive noise and do not protect their hearing, begin to lose their hearing at an early age. A loss of hearing can put others around you at risk. However, noise induced hearing loss is one hundred percent preventable. The first step in protecting your hearing is recognizing and respecting the hazard.

Prolonged unprotected exposure to excessive noise can cause irreparable hearing damage. It is vital therefor, that everyone in your facility take appropriate steps to protect their hearing from workplace noise. To give you a better idea, here are some samples of fairly common noises, that the EPA would consider excessive.

Can you feel the sound drilling through your ears
Can you feel the pain piercing through your brain
Can you hear the sound echo through the silence
Can you hear the silence overtake the sound

Can you feel the sound drilling through your ears
Can you feel the pain piercing through your brain
Can you hear the sound echo through the silence
Can you hear the silence as you lose your mind

Hearing loss usually occurs gradually, over years and it's mostly painless, so you probably won't even know it's happening, until it's too late.

Blasting through the air straight to your ears
Spewing from their mouths faster than the smoke
Constant moving cells, like machines, tireless
Lighting up the darkness constant overload

Polluting senses, auditory waste
Slow degradation of the human race

Once your hearing is gone, it's gone forever. There is no cure for hearing loss.

Hazardous noise
Reducing noise
Personal hearing protection

When noise induced hearing loss begins, the high frequencies are the ones lost first. Loss of high frequency hearing can also distort sound, making speech difficult to understand, even though it could be heard.

Many of us take it for granted, but good hearing and clear communication are essential to your quality of life and safety at work.

So it's important that you understand and proactively manage your exposure to noise.
