Sisters & Brothers by Fola Dada

„Sisters & Brothers“, das neue Album von Fola Dada, ist das beste Beispiel für perfektes Timing. Denn die Einspielung kommt zum genau richtigen Zeitpunkt in der Karriere der Trägerin des Deutschen Jazzpreises 2022 – exakt in jenem Moment, in dem sie selbstbewusst sagen und singen kann: „Hier bin ich.“ Dieser klaren Aussage liegt ein langer Prozess zugrunde, der sich aus freudvollen wie schmerzlichen Erfahrungen speist. „Man könnte es auch als Erwachsenwerden bezeichnen“, sagt die 1977 in Stuttgart geborene Sängerin. Mit „Sisters & Brothers“ zeigt sich Dada auf der Höhe ihrer Ausdruckskraft und Vermittlungskunst zwischen wärmendem elektroakustischen Jazz, Soul, R&B, Pop, Reggae und Clubbigem. Obwohl die Aufnahme ungemein lässig herüberkommt, brodelt, gärtt und arbeitet es in den elf Songs. Da geht es um Self Care und Selbsterkenntnis („Nowhere Near“, „Escape“), das rasende Aufmerksamkeitsdefizit unserer Zeit („We Run“, „Becoming“) oder um die jahrhundertealten Strukturen von Machtmissbrauch, Rassismus und Diskriminierung („We Will Heal“). Dada erhebt dabei nicht mahnend den Zeigefinger, sondern liefert gewissermaßen gesungene Lebenshilfe. Klug, umsichtig und ermunternd, als Türöffnerin ins Innere der Zuhörenden. Besonders treffend umreißt der Titelsong das Anliegen der Sängerin. Im virtuos-verspielten Dialog mit Joo Kraus' Trompete macht Fola Dada klar: Sisters & Brothers, wir müssen miteinander reden!

‘Sisters & Brothers’, Fola Dada's new album, is the best example of perfect timing. The recording comes at exactly the right time in the career of the 2022 German Jazz Award winner - precisely at the moment when she can confidently say and sing: ‘Here I am.’ This clear statement is the result of a long process fuelled by both joyful and painful experiences. ‘You could also call it growing up,’ says the singer, who was born in Stuttgart in 1977. With ‘Sisters & Brothers’, Dada shows herself to be at the height of her expressiveness and art of mediation between warming electro-acoustic jazz, soul, R&B, pop, reggae and club music. Although the recording comes across as incredibly laid-back, the eleven songs bubble, ferment and work. They are about self-care and self-knowledge (‘Nowhere Near’, ‘Escape’), the raging attention deficit of our time (‘We Run’, ‘Becoming’) or the centuries-old structures of abuse of power, racism and discrimination (‘We Will Heal’). Dada does not raise a warning finger, but rather provides a kind of sung help for life. Clever, prudent and encouraging, as a door opener to the listener's inner self. The title song particularly aptly outlines the singer's concern. In a virtuosic and playful dialogue with Joo Kraus' trumpet, Fola Dada makes it clear: Sisters & Brothers, we have to talk to each other!
