Frances Carey Slater - On the Road
Home! We leave in order to survive,
But far from you we will die like trees:
If you tear them out by the roots and throw them on the stones,
Their leaves will turn yellow, and their branches will dry up.
We will perish, as spring water perishes:
If you pour it into a pumpkin - its freshness will die,
It will become cloudy, sour, and rot.
We will perish, like babies near mothers' corpses,
Like chicks from destroyed nests.
Cities chew us with the jaws of houses,
Mines devour our light and air,
We grow old in the service of greedy machines,
Watering them abundantly with sweat and blood.
Home! We leave in the hope of returning,
We die far from you!
