eXoteric is a three part series of EPs featuring dub techno grooves laced together with static drone chords. While a similar technique was used with the recent Lurking Senses, an earlier Downscope release callled chœ actually had a similar approach back in June 2018 (links below). eXoteric focuses a bit more on minimalism, and low end groove. The drone chord stems from a Plaits module run through a Mankao Filter then fed through a Brainwaves pitch shifter followed by the ZVEX Lo-Fi Loop Junky effects pedal. The original generated chord becomes so manipulated and crushed that the noise artifacts from the signal path alone become a new instrument.
eX: VI starts with brushings from the same eXoteric sonic palette but with a somewhat playful, swing groove. Following in contrast is eX: VIII which presents a lamenting sendoff (technically it is the last track of this mini series) offering somber reflection with its slowed tempo and harsher tones. This release features a special live remix session eX: rX which conjures up content from earlier parts of the series with a more robust and reverberated approach.
