Goodbye, Hellen from Crane Style by Crane Style
This song was inspired by reading the Tao te Ching, which is loosely quoted, e.g. "know the raw silk, hold the uncut wood". I don't claim to have a deep understanding of Tao, but these lyrics were a first reaction to reading it, and contrasting it with Platonic (or Hellenistic) Dualism. In the song, I'm saying goodbye to Hellen as a representation of that kind of dualistic philosophy. The idea of paying dues is a bit of a tangent, a note of human frustration - the love of learning and growing can be dampened by the pressure to do so in order to prove myself in new ways to new people.
