Canopy Shyness by Chronic Anxiety

Chronic Anxiety started in 2016 as something of a joke; it was a way for a group of government employees to blow off steam about the bureaucratic hypocrisy and inflated egos they dealt with every day. But what began as a dissociative experiment soon turned into a powerful reality. Armed only with Hi Boi’s fuzzy Fender Bass VI, Hey Boi’s steady, smashing drumbeats, and Ambr (no e)’s half-screamed vocals (and the alter egos that allow them the freedom to mock the system without losing their jobs), they create an uneasy atmosphere that still makes you want to dance.

The trio wear their noise-rock influences well, imbuing their songs with the same raw energy as cornerstones like Shellac, Dead Moon, and Bikini Kill. They’ve found the balance between honest emotional vulnerability and fierce hostility, pulling listeners into their tension-filled world and then screaming in their faces. Using a potent mix of direct aggression and tongue-in-cheek sarcasm, a bulk of the band’s lyrics hurl criticisms at the capitalist structures that keeps marginalized groups oppressed. In short, they make the exact kind of music you’d hope to hear from a band named Chronic Anxiety.

Canopy Shyness, the band’s forthcoming full-length from Bunny Cat Records, shows Chronic Anxiety at their (and its) most fully-realized. They’ve settled in to their semi-industrial brand of lo-fi punk—even re-recording all four songs from 2017’s Faxed—and put together an album that speaks to the state of constant low-level dread we’ve all found ourselves in lately.
