Mabinogion I by Christian Grond

Ever since the early 1990s, after my first visit to Wales, I have been fascinated by the Mabinogion Celtic cycle of legends. I have used motifs from the Mabinogi in song lyrics several times, and in my paintings I also use the stage name "Gwydion", after a main character in the fourth branch of the Mabinogi. I was particularly touched by the literary adaptation of the cycle of legends by the American writer Evangeline Walton. In her book, she elaborates on the specifically pagan-Celtic aspects of the material of the legend, and this perspective is ultimately also the basis of this musical interpretation.

This album (Mabinogion I, the first branch of the Mabinogi) is about the heroic journey of Pwyll Prince of Dyfed to the Otherworld. There he fights Hafgan, the cruel enemy from the east, on behalf of Arawn, the lord of Annwn, whose form and identity he assumes for a year.

After many adventures, he finally wins the friendship and gratitude of Arawn and the powers of the Otherworld, and the love of the divine Rhiannon. Rhiannon leaves Annwn and marries Pwyll and together they rule the Golden Age of Dyfed.

Seit den frühen 90er-Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts, nachdem ich zum ersten Mal in Wales gewesen war, fasziniert mich der keltische Sagenzyklus des Mabinogions. So habe ich mehrmals Motive aus dem Mabinogion in Songtexten verarbeitet und führe zudem in meiner Malerei den Künstlernamen "Gwydion", nach einer Hauptfigur im vierten Zweig des Mabinogi. Besonders die literarische Adaption des Sagenzyklus durch die amerikanische Schriftstellerin Evangeline Walton hat mich tief berührt. Sie arbeitet in ihrem Buch das spezifisch heidnisch-keltische des Sagenstoffs heraus und diese Perspektive liegt schließlich auch dieser musikalischen Interpretation zugrunde.

Der erste Zweig des Mabinogi handelt von der Heldenreise des Pwyll Prinz von Dyfed in die Anderswelt. Dort kämpft er im Auftrag von Arawn, des Herrn von Annwn, dessen Gestalt und Identität er für ein Jahr annimmt, gegen Hafgan, den grausamen Feind aus dem Osten.

Nach vielerlei Abenteuern gewinnt er schließlich die Freundschaft und Dankbarkeit Arawns und der Mächte der Anderswelt, sowie die Liebe der göttlichen Rhiannon. Rhiannon verlässt Annwn und heiratet Pwyll und gemeinsam herrschen sie über das Dyfed des Goldenen Zeitalters.
