Beautiful Ugly: There’s a sense of resolution to this, both the titular and final track - almost a gentle rousing from the trance if you will. I love the way it builds; that upward stepping musical break is divine and a little reminiscent of The Kinks’ Golden Brown. To me it’s about looking beyond the surface mask and realising we’re all beautiful souls despite our messed-up lives.
This was the only one where I didn’t quite hit the mark initially. Originally the mask was much more demonic - I was going for gods and monsters - but Shaun wanted the idea I’d originally described of a white, flaking clown mask. We settled on this one, which is more ugly than evil, but has a hint of the faun from Pan’s Labyrinth, one of his favourite films. I think this was the better choice.
If you’ve got this far, I’m pleased, but also amazed I haven’t bored you to death! Please yourself and also be amazed by buying this album if you haven’t got it already. I’m going to say it - this is Captain of the Lost Waves’ best album to date. It’s also one of the best albums I’ve ever heard.
