Sonaural by Rough Idol
Sonaural is the first release of Tucson, AZ-based musician Jim Colby under the producer moniker Rough Idol. Each song is composed entirely of sounds harvested from field recordings of one specific geographic site within the city of Tucson, places such as swap meets, live music venues, abandoned strip malls, prisons, churches, and the desert on the outskirts of town. Some of the sounds within the songs have obvious origins, and others are mangled beyond recognition.
The music was originally conceived as the aural half of a collaborative artistic performance with DC-based video artist Patrick Cain. When debuted, each song was performed with an accompanying video created by manipulating raw footage of specific Tucson locations.
