This year, I moved out and left my dad's house, where I had lived for 30 years. Our home had various issues, and I thought this independence would only be an escape.
On the day I was leaving, my dad said he would be out so I could pack and leave on my own. I thought, how strange, and as I was getting ready to leave, I suddenly felt like writing a letter, in a rather old-fashioned way.
It was a letter that felt more awkward because we were so close. I managed to write just one word before tears started pouring down. My dad must have known that we would end up shedding tears that didn’t quite suit us.
It was then that I realized this wasn't escape—it was farewell.
To my dad, who gave great love and great wounds, who was too close to avoid conflict, who always found it hard to bear with me.
Remembering the snowman we built together when I was five.
