I learned today that tomorrow, October 4, is not only Bandcamp Friday, but Korvapuustipäivä (Cinnamon Bun Day) in Finland. Machine translations of websites commemorating this rather important day have returned head-tilting bits like the following:
“Let's celebrate ear buds! The national earworm day will be celebrated again on October 4, 2024. To celebrate the day, whip up a bun or two, and also delight your loved ones with a bun-scented greeting.”
Ear buds and earworns, oh my!
And frankly I hadn’t intended to put up these three tracks on this day, but how could I not now that I’ve been thus enlightened, especially as we just returned from a delightful two week holiday in Finland (with a few days spent in Sweden via the Helsinki-Stockholm cruiseferry). And yes, the korvapuusti (which Google translates as “earplugs”) were delicious!
These little pieces have been rising and baking in the metaphorical oven since the initial batch of bağlama-mangling, and this time around we have yet another instrument that I can’t really play thrown into the mix: a fretless bass which we also got at Hank’s Music Exchange.
(The Royal) We were going for something a bit less psychedelic, and more towards the territories of opening or closing soundtracks for TV dramas that got canceled within a season or less. No prying open of mystical third eyes, but something for drifting through the streets, trams, and subways of a Nordic city where the background chatter is incomprehensible, yet still human.
As always I am deliriously grateful for the entire exercise of mucking about and being able to share these confections with you all.
