Beautiful traditional music from “the old leon,” Segou-born Modibo Keïta, released first around 1973 through Mali’s Monastery Order of the Golden Knight. This n’goni master who was born in 1898 will capture you with his immediately arresting voice, nasal and harsh, and provides guidance and inspiration channeled in the form of song. The entire Mandenka nation was witness to his categorical refusal to curry favor with any politician or rich patron. It is interesting that in his immensely rich repertoire of both traditional and original songs, not a single one contains praises for a living person.
