Bridgecastle Road leads north from the town of Armadale in Central Scotland. About four miles down the road sits the Bridge Castle itself, an L-shaped structure to the west of the Barbauchlaw Burn. This area has yielded many mystical visions and been synonymous with countless ghostly encounters and narratives over the years. By far the most intriguing of these is the legend of the Bridgecastle Witch. Derived from a 17th Century account of a murdered servant girl (within the walls of the Bridge Castle), the story came to prominence in 1964 when a local woman called Margaret Saunders disappeared.

Her body was never found. At the time a student at Glasgow University, Saunders had been researching the history of British witchcraft — including the Bridgecastle Witch — and claimed to have identified the murdered servant girl as Charis Blaney. At this point, Saunders' life spiraled into chaos. Suddenly prone to panic attacks and seizures, she left her parents' house on the 24th of October 1964 and was never seen again.
