Oceanic by Atlanticus
ATLANTICUS is a group with members on each side of the “big pond” (hence our name), and we’ve been drawn to the idea of featuring oceans and rivers in our music titles from our first two albums, Blue Haven (2022) and Upstream. Three of us live by the sea in Brighton UK. More recently we have become interested in the important roles the oceans play in our planet. Occupying a vast 70% of the earth’s surface, they contain much wildlife still unknown to us, especially in the darkness of the deep ocean. They also influence and regulate the Earth’s climate, acting like the planet’s heart. However the way we carelessly exploit and pollute our seas and rivers threatens the biodiversity and sustainability of their ecosystems and thus impacts on our survival as well that of many other species. Accordingly UNESCO has made 2021-2030 The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. This has inspired us to contribute with Oceanic, a musical contemplation of the oceans focusing on their beauty, natural diversity, human impact and sustainability. Oceanic is a 5-part suite with video backdrop contemplating the oceans’ beauty and majesty, the diversity of wildlife, humanity’s impact, and the choices and responsibilities we face in protecting and sustaining them.
The creation of Oceanic was made possible by the support of Arts Council England. The album was recorded at the conclusion of our summer 2023 UK tour. In addition to the suite, it also includes a few fan favorites from our multiple tours over the years. The video accompaniment for each of the 5 parts are available with the download of the full album or individual tracks of the suite.
