La Encantá from Encantadas by An Danzza

Murcia is filled with tales of enchanted Moorish women, and this is one of the most famous. The
story of the Moorish woman from Piná er Tizón tells of Pepurro, a young man who, one hot
summer morning, was walking at the foot of the Castle of Alameda (El Palmar) when he suddenly
came across a fountain in the middle of nowhere, guarded by an old woman. Thirsty, Pepurro tried
to drink, but the old woman stopped him, saying he could only drink from her fountain if he kissed
her on the lips. Disgusted, Pepurro refused and walked away. However, this same scene repeated
every day until one day, either out of resignation or drunkenness (some versions say he was
intoxicated), he agreed to kiss her. To his shock, the old woman transformed into a beautiful young
Moorish woman who offered him great treasure and promised to marry him. Stunned, Pepurro
exclaimed, "Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!" The mere utterance of these names caused the Moorish
woman, along with the treasure and the fountain, to vanish forever.
