About:
Janneke van der Putten is an artist based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Janneke’s work has been presented in Europe, America, Asia, and in the African continent at the Lagos Biennale, 2021, and at Institut Français de Mauritanie, 2022. Janneke’s debut exhibition 'All Begins With A', TENT (Rotterdam, 2015) was curated by Mariette Dölle (NL) and Niekolaas Johannes Lekkerkerk (NL). Other solo shows are 'Directed to the Sun', Atelierhaus Quartier am Hafen (Cologne, 2017), 'Quitsa', CINNNAMON (Rotterdam, 2017), and duo-show '[to]', Kunstraum 34 (Stuttgart, 2020). Van der Putten was awarded fellowships for the artist-in-residencies at Centre international d’art et du paysage (Île de Vassivière, 2014), Tupac & Aloardi (Lima, 2015), Haute école des beaux-arts du Rhin (Mulhouse/Strasbourg, 2019), and Akademie Schloss Solitude (Stuttgart, 2019).
Janneke’s performance workshop ‘Textile and Voice in the Landscape’ was programmed at el revés de la trama, the 45th Colombian National Salon of Artists (Bogota, 2019) thanks to curator Ana Ruiz Valencia (CO). Other of Janneke’s situated and collective practices such as ‘Geo-astronomical Relations: the Moon and the River as our Elements’ was developed with art students from BEAR – ArtEz (Arnhem, 2020). In 2022 the workshop ‘Sunrise to Sunrise’ was realized at GAMPA, Pardubice, thanks to curator Šárka Zahálková (CZ).
Janneke’e solo debut album ‘JNNK’ has been released on vinyl on the June 21st Solstice 2023 with label Aloardi and foundation Idraola. It was produced by her long-term collaborator Sajjra Xhrs Galarreta (PE) and was featured with an article by Abi Bliss (UK) in The Wire magazine, issue 475. A previous album was made together with Galarreta for their project ‘Invisible Architecture’ (Aloardi, 2015). Other composers Janneke collaborated with are Siavash Akhlaghi (IR), Budhaditya Chattopadhyay (IN), Werner Durand (DE), Yvan Etienne (FR), Philemon Mukarno (ID/NL), Rory Pilgrim (UK) and Marcus Schmickler (DE).
Since 2014 Janneke has been part of collective Aloardi, a media-art platform based in Lima since 1998. In 2016 and 2017 van der Putten produced and co-curated the ‘Aloardi Exchange Programme’, inviting Peruvian artists to present their work in the Schengen Area, in collaboration with WORM Rotterdam and other hosting organisations.
Janneke van der Putten holds a MMus in Artistic Research, Royal Academy of Art & Royal Conservatoire (The Hague, 2011 – 2013) and graduated with a BDes with Honours from TXT (Textile), Gerrit Rietveld Academy (Amsterdam, 2003 – 2009), which included a semester at the San Francisco Art Institute (San Francisco, 2008). Janneke studied classical North-Indian Dhrupad singing with Amelia Cuni (IT) and Marianne Svašek (NL) between 2009 and 2014, and is autodidact in various extended vocal techniques. Janneke is a certified Womb Circle facilitator (Womben Wellness, 2024).
Janneke’s work was supported by Mondriaan Fund, CBK Rotterdam/Centre for Visual Arts Rotterdam, Prins Bernhard Culture Fund, Music Export Rotterdam, and CrossYart.
