Zebulon by alex rose ~ canyon counterpoint
Canyon Counterpoint is American singer-songwriter Alex Rose. Rose has cut a wide geographical swath calling Los Angeles, Seattle, Brooklyn and Austin home in different chapters, releasing music under her own name since 2016.
In 2019, she renamed her project Canyon Counterpoint and on May 21, 2021 she will release her debut full-length album Zebulon (styled in webdings).
Building on a steady stream of self-released singles, the album is a sonically diverse collection of ten songs written in Los Angeles between 2017-2019 and recorded with Theo Karon at Hotel Earth in Eagle Rock, California. Theo Karon credits include recording with Angel Olsen, Ben Babbitt and Julia Holter.
Zebulon songs include “Giant” - a song about love and loss: an off-Hollywood romance dreamt in Marfa, TX and her quarantine-era single “One Week in a Life,” a song about the ephemerality of life’s experiences all against a backdrop of psychedelic art and a fire-following wildflower bloom.
At the center of a swirl of piano, guitar, woodwind arrangements, synthesizers and drums is the core instrument of her music practice: her voice. Rose spins sung stories using poetry, harmony and chorus. Artistically she is interested in creating new ways to sing and express through a feminist perspective, in turn inspiring others to voice their own truths. One subtle through-line on Zebulon is the “doo-lang, doo-lang, doo-lang” refrain which aims to re-imagine fawning into feminine fury.
